9th–12th Curriculum - Evergreen Virtual Academy

9th–12th Curriculum

During grades, 9-12 students will focus on time management, career and college readiness skills, and exposure to technology. EVA nurtures students throughout high school, putting interest-led exploration at the forefront. We are committed to helping students find and follow their passions while equipping them with the skills needed for success in the 21st century.

There are many paths to success

At EVA we believe students should have choice. Success is not achieved in one particular way. Many of our students continue their education at a 4-year university, while others choose to explore apprenticeships, trades, or other paths to success.

Students can chart their own course, choosing between two versions of our courses to best match their aptitude and goals.

Two versions of core subjects

High school students can harness the power of individualized learning by choosing from the following two versions of math, language arts/English, science, and history courses:

  • Core courses are similar to the standard courses offered by many other programs. They meet all academic requirements for each course area both for graduation as well as for potential admission into a wide range of colleges.
  • Comprehensive courses are designed for students entering with strong foundational knowledge and aptitude in the subject area being covered, as well as solid study skills.

Students learn how to carefully read, interpret, and analyze literature and nonfiction works of cultural or historical significance. At each grade level, students practice narrative, informational, and argument writing, and develop public speaking skills by delivering presentations and participating in discussions with their peers.

Juniors and Seniors explore American, British and World Literature, and engage in critical writing, creative projects, and online discussions.

Students begin with Algebra 1 to deepen their understanding of linear and exponential relationships, then progress to Geometry where they learn to explain geometric relationships and form a basis for formal mathematical arguments. In order to graduate, students must complete the third year of math and may choose among Algebra II, Probability and Statistics, or Practical Math. Students planning to attend a 4-years school should take Algebra II in order to meet college entrance requirements, and are encouraged to continue to Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus. For the most advanced math learners, college-level Math 111 & Math 112 classes are available.

Our Science pathway at EVA is split into two. Our 4-year university-bound students will study a science each of their 4 years, while students on our graduation path will take 3 years of science. We cater to a large scope of interests within science with everything from biology to forensics. All students will be taking Chemistry and Biology, and depending on their plans after graduation could also choose from earth science, physics, or anatomy. All of our courses have online direct instruction, while some even offer lab opportunities and collaborative assignments.

Our 3-year progression for social studies takes our students on a comprehensive journey through the ages. We begin with Modern World History where students examine both the staggering problems and astounding accomplishments of the twentieth century, with a focus on political and social history. Students in their second year will move on to Modern US History where they will gain a comprehensive view of American history from the industrial revolution of the late nineteenth century to recent events. The Last year of Social Studies at EVA focuses on US Government and politics. In this class, students take a close look at the political culture of our country and gain insight into the challenges faced by citizens, elected government officials, political activists, and others.

At EVA, we value our student’s overall health and wellbeing and pride ourselves on a variety of courses that students can take focusing on physical and mental wellbeing. Physical education provides students the opportunity to participate in cardiovascular, aerobic, muscle-toning, and other activities. We also offer a Health Skills course that leads students through elements of nutrition, the dangers of substance abuse, personal growth and development, and the importance of environmental conservation. Our Nutrition course offers an in-depth overview of good nutrition principles that are necessary for physical and mental wellness and a long, healthy life.

In preparation for the wealth of experiences awaiting them, we believe all students at EVA should have the opportunity to explore foreign language. Knowledge of the Spanish language is an increasingly useful asset in our global world.
